A local man, and family friend of ours, died on Sunday morning after accidentally shooting himself while at a local gun club. Just a grim reminder to always be safe, and cherish the time you have on this Earth, because you never know when it'll all be gone. He left a wife and four kids behind...truly sad.

A Midland man died in an accidental shooting at a local gun club Sunday morning.

Midland County Sheriff Jerry Nielsen said the accident occurred at 10:57 a.m. at the Midland Sportsman's Club on Sturgeon Road.

Michael W. Laursen, 48, was at the club to sight in three revolvers, Nielsen said. Officials believe the accident occurred when Laursen slipped and fell, and the revolver he was preparing to fire on the outdoor range discharged when he and it struck the ground. He was alone on the range.

Assisting deputies at the scene in Larkin Township were MidMichigan Medical Center EMS and Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Dennis Wagner.

No foul play is suspected, a media release states. "This was an accident," Nielsen said this morning.

Nielsen said Laursen went to the club after dropping his son off at the ice arena at 10:15 a.m., telling the boy he'd be back to pick him up in about an hour when he was done shooting.

Laursen's other two revolvers were found on a nearby bench. One bore a note reading, "Sight in," the other a note reading, "Fine tune."

Nielsen said Laursen is originally from Minnesota, and was a founding member of the Hantz Financial Group.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

Obituary

Michael Laursen, a loving husband to his wife Julie, and a wonderful father to his four children Kelsey, Emily, David and Mckenzie, left us unexpectedly on March 9, 2008, following a tragic accident.

He is also survived by his parents, Wayne and Earlene of Rochester, Minn., and sister Jody (Paul) Sperduto of Minnetonka Beach, Minn., along with loving in-laws; nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins. Born in Rochester, Minn. in 1959, a graduate from Mayo High School Class of 1978, Mike went on to graduate from St.Cloud State University. While working at American Express in Downtown Minneapolis he met the love of his life, Julie Olson. They were married in May of 1990 and then moved to Midland in 1992. He became a founding member of The Hantz Financial Group out of Detroit. As a devoted father and a man with many friends Mike was active in his community and a contributing member to his church, Trinity Lutheran. Michael was an avid outdoorsman who loved the forest and mountains of Montana. His rich sense of humor and zest for life will be missed by everyone who knew him. Truly a Cowboy at heart, he never turned down a good adventure. Happy Trails.

Funeral services for Mike will take place at 4 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2008, from Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Kirk Havel and the Rev. Gerald Ferguson will officiate.

Mike's family will receive friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 3 p.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Trinity Lutheran Church Special needs Fund.
