grinding noise and uneasy steering

hey i just picked up a 1998 svt contour today and i noticed while i was driving it home that there was a loud grinding noise while im driving. i took the wheels off and looked at the brakes and both sides are good. also the insides of the tires are down to the steel bands but i dont think that could cause a loud grinding noise. i was thinking maybe its a wheel bearing. and with the steering the steering wheel likes to move back and forth while driving tie rods all checked out fine. some help would be greatly appreciated

I got the car for 1000 so I new there would be issues but I went with my gut feeling and it was the wheel bearing
