Might be a long story but I'm very excited about the new opportunity so I wanted to share.
When I graduated from college in 2006, I needed a job to cover the bills while I pursued some musical endeavors I was interested in, so I found employment at a company 10 minutes down the road from my home. They hired me full-time as an Administrative Assistant in a "semi-temporary" capacity (read "low paying") but after six months, they realized that I was able to handle a much wider variety of projects than what I was originally hired for. So in January 2007 they gave me a modest bump in my hourly rate and started piling on work that pretty much spanned every department in the company. I took on a bit of a "project person" role, including low level IT work since I have a pretty strong knowledge in that department.
I took it all in stride and gave my best even though the pay was less than stellar, but in early 2010 I dropped to part-time because I had started a private lesson business that was doing pretty well. After a while, though, I decided that I really wasn't diggin the teaching thing like I thought I would so I went to speak with my boss (the President). He had said to me on more than one occassion that if I was ever ready to consider a more career-oriented path to let him know, so at the end of 2010 I told him that if they were willing to put something real on the table, I'd seriously consider it.
Basically, they came back with a bit under what I had in mind dollar-wise but allowed me to negotiate up to a decent middle ground (which they don't typically do when they make job offers at this company). There was also a strong profit sharing plan and excellent benefits, plus 2.5 hours of built-in overtime a week that basically puts me where I wanted to be, so I took the job yesterday (I always worked the extra 2.5 when I was full-time so there is no change there). My official title is Executive Assistant but includes IT Specialist work and Procurement/Project stuff as separate items in the job description, and I was able to negotiate based on that. They just couldn't come up with a more fitting title since my job is all over the place. I report only to the President and Vice President.
And on top of all this, my boss has brought up sending me for my MBA on the company's dime in the future (this was a separate discussion) and there is also room for moving up (he specifically said to me that he doesn't want me to be in this position for the rest of my life).
Anyways, I'm pumped because this puts me in a very good spot as far as financial stability and retirement savings goes. I also enjoy working here for my two bosses and the company actually continued to grow through the economic downturn, so I know it's not going anywhere. Plus it's literally $9.00 a week in gas for the commute. I start Monday morning.
