Get the Network Key at work

Fellas,

I recently bought a Touch Ipod and I've been wanting to be able to get on the wifi network at work.

When I pull the network connection, I can see the dots where the security key is entered. When I attempt to high light it it goes blank. I was hoping I could copy it and paste it into a blank document to see what it is.

This even happens on my work laptop.

Has anyone found a way to retrieve it in this situation? I mean it's on the laptop somewhere...

thanks!

Dont you think it would be pretty stupid if anyone could just copy and paste the dots into notepad and see the key? lol

Ask the IT guys at work if they will let you get it online and have them enter the key for you. They probably will say no.

I would be nice lol... It works with most password programs I've used.

I think they will say no. I plan on using it on my breaks. It's not like I'm going to hack the server from my Itouch, I really don't see the big deal...

Maybe that's why you're not working their IT systems.

Not to mention that hacking your employers network key would/should get your ass the boot. This isn't the economy to be job searching.

+1 - I'm 99% sure this will be a violation of your corporate acceptable use policy. If the IT department wanted you to have the encryption key, it would be provided to you. If you want to surf the web on your breaks, buy an aircard and a laptop.

There are ways, but you have to use a program to do it. And I dont know about an iphone. My guess is no. And as an IT professional, Im not going to reveal anything other than that.

And the "big deal" is that if you connect that iphone to the network, you just opened up a can of worms into the network. Someone could theroetically hacking into your iphone, then into your works network.

For a self-professed "IT professional" that answer sure leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe that's the part that you are "not going to reveal". IDK

If you had the key and the network was secure, you still would not get out because their firewall would still block present you with a logon window because the phone is not a member of the domain.

Secondly, someone could hack the I-phone at Starbucks, they don't need him to get on his work network????????????

Thirdly, (which is not a word) anyone that hacked his I phone on the network would already be on the network because he would be inside the firewall so they would not need his phone to hack the network.

What...exactly is your job?

Probably the cheapest solution that would work decently. I have never tethered an Iphone though.

i used my blackberry, hated it, then used my Alias. braodband speeds were awsome.

there you go. No chance of losing your job with that and you can still surf porn at work which we all know was your real goal anyway.

Mission accomplished!

im terrified of porn. sems your internet provider would know everything you ever searched for or downloaded. my brother has a business repairing cpu's fixing viruses and he's told me that people try and hide their porn and hide their history but its impossible. my luck, i would know someone down at charter and they would look up my internt surf stuff....so i stay far away from porn and other things that trip those federal watch dog lists.

if you think that they dont keep tabs on you....type in your google search bar something about the anarchist cookbook...or talk about k!llng the pres. see who shows up at your door.

just going to fill in and answer for the guy..
first... it depends on how there firewall is set up, not all networks require you to log in (that is what the network key is for)

secondly, that is probably why the dont want him to have the network key incase something on his iphone is already been hacked then there could be a chance there system gets hacked because his iphone is on the system.

third you are right unless his iphone has a virus on it with a back door then they need his iphone to hack the network.

I guess you missed where I said......AND THE NETWORK WAS SECURE........

Yes, some networks don't have security. In those cases, they don't need a key or an I phone to break in so the whole conversation becomes a meaningless point at that time.

a network can be secure and not have to login to get to the out side world, and i got the part where you said the network was secure since it is a buisness most buisness are secure nowdays. I would like to think i know some about this stuff since this is what im in school for.

I dont feel like going into all the details. And also He did not provide any information about how secure it was or not. So we could talk about what if all day.

And you dont have to be part of a domain to have internet access. Being part of a domain just means you have rights on that domain to access certain files or computers. I see what you are saying though, and I was not really talking about that.

Mainly what I am trying to say is, assuming they have no other security other than the key, if he illegally connects his iphone to the network that iphone has apps and whatnot that could leave openings in the network for someone to break into. If there are security holes in the iphone and a virus found a way into his iphone, it could then spread into the rest of the network. All that key does is provide access to that network, other than that if its not properly secured its open season. But like I said he did not provide that much information.

Im not sure if I am explaining it the way I want, and I dont know much about the iphone so im not sure how secure it is or not.

The ironic part is I never said a had an Iphone. Otherwise, I'd just get a data plan on it.

I am not going to grab the company laptop and bring it into the lunch room. Nobody here does that and it would be frowned on. Poking the screen of a Itouch does not infer you are surfing the web and is much more practical than lugging the laptop and risk spilling something on it or having other people want to use it.
