i would highly recommend having them professionally installed, unless you really know what you are doing...

you can't just learn how to do that project on your own... you need precision tools and know-how.

No problem. Really, the only things I didn't do myself was actually physically putting the gears in (they were afraid I'd drop them on myself) and the crush sleeve...being a girl, I did not have the physical strength for that one. The only special tool you'd need is a dial indicator, that I can remember. We did the swap exactly two years ago.

I set up a 9 inch for my 69 cougar. You do need specific tools for the job, but a 9 inch is easier that a 8.8 .
on a 8.8 ya also need a pinion depth tool.
When we did the rear end in my Mach1 (8.8"), I took a ton of pictures and videos. I also did a fairly detailed write-up. Even better, I recorded all of the measurements we took and documented the mathematics behind pinion depth and ring gear backlash (see page 2):

+1 it's not that complicated if you know what you are doing but if you don't there is a lot that can go way wrong real fast.
