Fuel gauge not working.

I was driving home the other day with about 1/2 a tank of gas when my fuel guage started to slowly move to empty. I checked for leaks and did not smell fuel so I am pretty sure its the sender. Has anyone changed just the fuel sender before becsuse looking online it looks like I have to buy the whole fuel pump and basket. I know I will have to drop the tank to investigate further, just looking for ideas. Its a 98 cobra.

If it is the sender it will indeed need a new pump because the two are integrated.

Its a PITA but not impossible.

To be honest you could pull it all of and maybe the floater came off... i dunno. Fuel pumps are pretty cheap anyways.
