Found this plastic in my oil pan. Any ideas?

Going to look at the timing chain guides.

I don't think I've seen guides that were black in color before, usually white/tan. You're sure it's plastic and not rtv? Do you have a 13/14 windage tray?

I havent seen the pieces personally, The shop sent the pics.

No 13/14 windage tray, the motor was built in 2006.

Black guides do exist or at least did for a short time.

From what I've seen on 2 4.6s is the drivers side straight guide breaks if you don't have ratcheting tensioners.

The later design operates with oil pressure only and under certain throttle conditions allows the chain to basically jump off the gear and beat up the straight guide.

If you've ever seen a ship drop an anchor you'll know what I am talking about.

Op make sure the shop installs not only metal backed guides but also ratcheting tensionsers. You'll want to have them modified too.

You basically grind off a few teeth on the mechanism so they can only extend and lock to a certain point. You're preventing them from adding to much mechanical tension and allowing the tensioner to operate on oil pressure only after a point.

Google it, you'll see what I mean.

Didn't they also make spacers to go with the metal tensioners that kept them from being able to retract too far? Should the ratchet mechanism fail.

I don't know why because that's the purpose of the ratcheting mechanism. As it extends the mechanism won't allow it to compress.

Grading a few teeth off keeps it from getting to tight and prematurely wearing out the guides.

It's probably more for the racing guys that use 2 steps.

That makes sense. Been a long time since I've messed with tensioners.

Grinding the teeth off the ratcheting mechanism keep them from extending to far and the spacer keeps them from being excessively compressed.

How's the oil fill cap look or the oil pan gasket? Those the only other thing I can think of that would be black plastic although the shapes don't really match up.

Could they be gasket pieces that have gotten hard over the years? Not that there are many real gaskets on these engines.

I'd be concerned about more of that plastic stuck to the screen on your oil pickup tube, hindering flow.

Edit: You probably dropped the pan already, since it looks like those pieces wouldn't make it through the drain hole. But just double check the pickup tube screen. I had plastic chunks stuck in mine.
