I could buy a crate 5.4, forge it, put a blower on it for under 20k.... what makes this so special?

As I'm sure you know Kar Kraft has a tremendous heritage. They are the ones who built the Boss 429 for Ford. It wouldn't surprise me if they are the only ones offering the GT motor. I'm here to tell you they will sell them. Maybe not many, but they will sell them. There's always someone with more money than they know what to do with.

Can you imagine that in a street rod or resto early mustang???

I would think that the main reason that they are so much is because they are a Ford GT specific motor; but more than that, they are hand built!! BUt I do agree that that is rediculous to pay! If you think about it from my point of view; check this out: I could have an all forged C5R motor built WITH race ported C5R heads and have the entire drivetrain to match complete with all the boltons. North of 600RWHP and a very drivable car with an engine more powerful and more bulletproof than that GT motor...and I'm sure that you guys could do the same with a Ford race motor as well. It's all about prestige...and that is why people will buy that motor. Imagine a Boss Mustang from back in the day with that motor dropped in it...would probably fetch about 200k at Barret Jackson!!

No probably not, but I have never HEARD of one going bad. Those engines are bulletproof!! Not to say that they wouldn't break, but then again, you would have an extra 20k to pour into fixing it before you had to worry about equalling the cost of the GT one. Like I said, you are paying for the prestige of owning that particular engine.

This topic really has been beat to death but you really can't compare the GT engine with a C5R. Chevy has been building off a proven design for 4 decades. And your correct, I can build a long block 514 crate straight from Ford for $6g, with 625hp base trim. The GT engine is much more exotic. And for anybody that still thinks it's just a modded Lightning engine, really shouldn't be in this forum. I'm not saying the GT engine is worth the full $45g, but to compare it to anything else american would be wrong, because it's a new breed.

Pics speak better then words sometimes. Here's a rightup that Hot Rod did on it.

You make a point, but the C5R engine, while still being a pushrod, is a lot different than a normal engine. The head design and so much more. The GT engine is a better built Lightning engine! Thin about it this way...if you took a Lightning engine, had it blue printed, everything professionally ported, tuned, and built by hand, you would have the exact same motor. The difference is is the fact that the company is doing this and not an aftermarket specialist. The engine is actually going into a production car and will have a code on the Vin and in the door. That is why it is so much money. That and throw in the fact that it is going into a very limited production 150k car. This is why, in my opinion, the engine is so much money. Any hand built engine that you try and buy from the factory is going to cost a bunch of money. Look at the 911's engine. The TT is about 50k I think. Both cars are about the same price and both engines are built by hand. Can't wait to run into a GT on the streets:)

...so I can lose:( Badass car!!!

as cool as that motor is, 45K!?!??! it's only making 550 horsepower! while that is a shit load of power, I could just go buy an 03 cobra motor for 10k, call up mister bell, and be running 750 hp, for under 20k total. While it is a bad-ass motor, and alot of work went into it....that's just plain bullshit lolol

Since when has the Lightning had 32 valve heads and a dry sump oiling system? The GT engine is closer to a Cobra R engine than a Lightning engine.

Basically the ford GT engine is the best combination of svt engine components put in the lightning and cobras. It has the displacement of the lightning but with and aluminum block, it has the 32v heads from the cobra, and then it has a twinscrew blower and internals much stronger than the already proven ones in the 03-04 cobra motors. Its a freakin badass motor no doubt, but it nots worth that much money, they are just charging that much because of the name. If you think about it you could get a fully built lightning longblock from vt for like 10g and then swap on a freakin turbo setup and still save a shit load of money. But if you had that setup you couldnt say u had a ford gt motor :p

There was actually a set of 05 Ford GT heads on Ebay but it ended today, didn't sell. They were bare heads and bidding starts at 1750. Same heads as on the 00R, which is said to have the best flow rates of all modular Ford DOHC heads including the 03 Cobra heads.

for $45 grand, i'd get a used '97 vette, forge the bottom end, put in heads/cam and a nice turbo setup and walk away from a ford GT all day long...........
