Explain the difference between returnless and return style fuel system?

After two years of owning this car, I still don't know much about the fuel systems for fuel systems available for whatever.

I heard our 2003 cobras have a return-less style fuel system. What does that mean? What what does it mean when you have a return system? What impact does it have on tunning OR how is it better than a return-less style?

Pointing me to a link that explains this would be fine.

A returnless style does not have fuel lines putting extra fuel back into the tank.
A return style has fuel lines coming from the fuel line putting fuel back into the fuel tank

Return systems are the way to go with big horsepower. I have no idea why Ford went the -less route on our cars.
