Maybe there's a spring in there that's broken or something.

my whole handle rattles not just the button.

My BoyF has a 97' also and his button rattles too... I don't want to replace the whole handle.

I'm guessing the handle on the original just twists off since you can buy that billet shit for it. Get a stock assembly and just replace the handles on the two.
