What burner do you use?
Sony /DRU-500A.

Would you recommend this burner?
If you don't mind the $350.00 ($250.00 for the OEM DW-U12A) US retail price tag, sure.

What software do you use?
DVD-Cloner 1.98 and Nero 5.5.10.42.

Would you recommend this software?
Sure. Will be trying out Nero 6.0.0.9 later this week.

Does burning DVDs create an exact duplicate...?
DVD-Cloner 1.98 and Nero 6.0.0.9 are capable of faithfully reproducing 1:1 copies. Alternative commercial DVD replication software may offer superior deconding/encoding properties.

Copying a dvd is gonna give you the same level of quality you get when copying cds. Sorry but you cannot COPY movies 1:1, if that is what you are thinking of doing. Movies are produced on double layer (not double-sided) DVDs which are not supported by DVD burners, plus you cant buy the blank media. You can get a pretty close reproduction, albeit at a lower quality through video compression using software like DVDxCOPY from 123 studios or Pinnacle Instant Copy. Try researching at www.dvdrhelp.com or www.doom9.org. I don't want you spending your money buying a dvd-burner thinking you will be able to go out and get perfect dvd quality movies.

OH ... definitely MUCH better than VHS. It really depends on the length of the movie you are copying. Some of the shorter movies will actually fit with full quality. Sometimes you have to do things like take out the subtitles, extra languages, or other extras on the dvd to make it fit with full quality. Usually you will get anywhere from 70% of DVD quality or better. Still way better than VHS.

That is not 100% true. You can use Xcopy http://www.dvdxcopy.net/ which splits the original disk in 2. If anyone had Laserdiscs, this is the same thing. Insert next disc to continue. It does not use compression and you can even tell it which chapter to do the split on.

I cut out everything except the movie itself and haven't been able to notice ANY loss of quality converting with DVD2One.
