Dumb question: Removing stock wheel center caps?

I got my powdercoated wheels back today, and I'm meeting with the guy that is going to paint the centercaps tonight. I've never actually removed the caps myself, and just to be sure that I don't damage the caps or the new powdercoating... is there a trick to getting the caps off easily?

just pull them right off by hand very easy

Yeah? Okay, I figured it was simple, but they didn't move with light pressure and I didn't want to force them and break any tabs off. I have a bad habit of doing that.
