Valve notching tools

I'm writing this up for the diy guys. This is a very cheap and easy alternative to buying the isky piston notching tools which are 133.00 each!
(note notching your pistons for clearance is an involved process and should not be jumped into without careful planning. This is not a write-up for that process, it is however a write-up to make your own tools to do it)

First, parts ... You will need the following

2 intake valves ( 2.02 )
2 exhaust valves ( 1.60)
1 package of 5 min clear epoxy
several mixing sticks for epoxy, I use toothpix
Roloc sanding disks. 36 grit and 50 grit 2 of each
Razor blades
Electric drill with wire brush
4 sparkplug boots

Cost:
Roloc disks 4 for 8.00
5 min epoxy 4.99
Valves I had laying around ( free )
Razor blades 10 pack .99 cents
Toothpicks free
Sparkplug boots free, they were leftovers from last tuneup
Total cost for me was under 20.00

Making the cutters

1. USE ALL SAFETY EQUIPMENT

1 take the 36 grit roloc disk and remove the plastic connector with a razorblade. Insert the blade under the plastic and remove it from the disk.

2 clean the face of the valve with the drill and wire brush

3 mix 5 min epoxy according to instructions

4 use toothpick to apply epoxy to the face of the valve and put the modified roloc disk on to the face of the valve.

5 clamp or hold the disk into position with a vise until epoxy is hardened, this is very important not doing so will have bad results. I didn't have a vise so I used a block of wood, and set the valve on on a flat surface, put the block of wood on the stem and used my body weight to press down on the valve until the epoxy cured.

6 now that the roloc is secured you will notice that the valve diameter is smaller than the roloc. The extra roloc disk material needs to be removed to the same diameter as the valve. I did this by attatching the valve stem into my electric drill and spinning it against my dremel to remove the excess. You could also just spin the valve against an abrasive surface such as concrete to remove the excess.

Now you repeat this process for the other valves using the 36 grit and 50 grit. You should have 2 intake valves with 36 grit and 50 grit and 2 exhaust valves with 36 grit and 50 grit.



7 spark plug boots

I use my spark plug boots as a measuring and stopping tool
Take the boot and cut about 3/8 off the end of each boot. These are uses to slide on the valvestem as a depth guide and stop

things to remember, safety first!!!! Keep in mind that when using these cutter very little goes a LONG way! You can muck up a set of pistons very quickly by not being careful. Take your time and best of luck!
