Well.. My understanding is this: We were running 7 qts with the smaller factory oil pan and now that you have a larger one, you need to run 8 or 9 qts to get the oil to the same level.

weird topic, as i have the 7qrt pan and the oil filter relocation kit and i run about 9 1/2 to 10 qrts of oil and its causing my oil pan to leak. I know i sealed it real good, and now i have to take it all apart again to just have it leak again from too much oil.

Canton told me at first to use a ford econline dipstick cut 3 1/4'' and tac welded back together.

Now there telling me to just run 7qrts and they don't understand why people would need to run more than that.

There is a thread about this very topic over at the corral, but you might have to search for it. I remember that people where talking about using an f150 dip stick. I would also talk directly to Canton racing products and one thing they will say is that the oil pan should not have more than 7 qts of oil.

When I had my 7qt Canton on my 01 Cobra I needed to add 8 1/2 qts to read the max marker on the dipstick. On my 03 Cobra 7qts reads the top of the max line and we know the stock pan is identified as a 6qt pan. So do with that what you wish.

My apologies for bringing up an old thread, but I'd like some clarification and, also, to see if anyone has any advice/updates with this issue.

I just bought an '03. Previous owner installed the Canton 7 quart oil pan with windage tray. I was advised by multiple sources, including Canton, that I only need 7 quarts.

Like said above, my stock dipstick does not register the oil.

I've seen on multiple forums, including this one, about modifying the stock dipstick, buying Canton's, using an F-150 dipstick, etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure if it helps, but I run an MMR pan. I was told to use the dipstick as normal, and fill it til it reads normal.
Ends up being 10 quarts in my case.
Edit: My turbo oil lines add a bit to a normal 4.6 capacity too.

I have the Moroso road race pan and run 9 in mine to show about 3/4 on the dip stick. right or wrong I dunno but that's what I've been doing.

I remember someone doing a test on a Canton pan ages ago with water before installing it.

From what I remember the kick outs and increased capacity did not keep the pickup properly submerged with 7 quarts.

One of these days I'll install one and find out for myself.

That makes the most sense to me
If you use the original dip stick the oil will be below the seam where the pan and block meet and below the crank. Our motor has the crank not swinging below the block. Since the crank can’t airate the oil if it’s below the block / oil pan line you can fill it to the normal dip stick’s reading without issue. Since the oil line is below the pan gasket there should not be a leak just from having ‘too much oil’ (pan should be sealed properly anyways).
