What would y'all recommend taking with me? I'm taking my laptop and I'm probably going to buy a kindle or an ipod. Any advice is appreciated, also. I can't wait!

Which carrier are you heading out on? Are you asking for just entertainment or anything and everything? Last time I went out I had my laptop. I had a video ipod, but it was stolen before one of the work ups. I liked having that because I could watch movies in my rack more comfortably. Something like a PSP might not be a bad idea because you can do games, music, and movies on it.

Not just entertainment, just anything that will make life easier/pass the time. I'm going on the Stennis out of Bremerton, Washington.

I'd rather get this over the PSP: Xperia

^ Phone, entertainment center, and certified Playstation device.

Good luck, shipmate. Here is my list after doing this for years:
Personal pillow and blanket
Good headphones, I bring two. Small buds for working out and over the ear to deaden sound while sleeping and relaxing in the rack.
Nice shower shoes (think thick and hi)
Twice as manynshirts/socks/undderwear as you think
Uniform backup items
Good camera
SCUBA gear (okay maybe thast is just a carib drugops thing)
Good supply of toiletries
Shoes to walk miles in and shoes to get into the nice clubs on liberty.
Don't go cazy on liberty outfits.
Harddrive half loaded with pics/music/vids, fill the other half as you go.
Kindle would be cool, but yeah books any way you choose.

That ought to fill up your coffin locker. Work hard, play hard.

What's your rate? I just got out and left the Stennis a few months ago. Don't pack too much liberty attire, 5 days worth and wash or buy new clothes in port as needed. Have as many pairs of coveralls as you fit in your bags.

Last deployment I had my net book and my desktop both. We were underway this last week and my Kindle was used ALOT but my Xoom was hardly turned on..

You only need a few white t-shirts but bring a boat load of blue ones..

Make sure the laundry goes down (and gets returned) on time..

Take plenty of photos overseas, with a good camera..

Stay out of trouble

definitely have 2 weeks worth minimum of all laundry items, because in a couple months, you will be left with 1 weeks worth due to the dirtbags and their filthy, stealing hands.

ipod is a must

workout clothes! i kept my sanity by hitting the gym every day but Sunday. You either get ripped on deployment from working out, or fatter from being a bum, your choice

hard drive and laptop. in order to get movies and tv shows from people, you need to trade up.

other than those, all the 'common sense' items. hygiene, uniforms, etc. good luck out there, i loathe deployments...absolutely loathe them

I went out on the GW in 04. I lost a ton of weight just from being on deployment and didnt have to workout. Most of these guys hit it on the head man. Id say take a little cash and your checkbook so you can buy stuff on the boat if you need it or want it.
