So today I did a little work on my Cobra to fix a coolant leak, and I wanted to do a cooling system burp. I don't remember tightening the coolant crossover plug as tight as it was, I even tried tapping it with a hammer in hopes it would break loose. Unfortunately, I pushed it a little too far and managed to break the end of a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter off in the plug. I eventually got the plug out with a set of visegrips, however, I felt it was time to fashion up a new plug. I'm using some 1" hex 303 stainless steel for the new plug. I chose the hex, because it'll give me a nice head to grab on with a wrench instead of a puny 1/4" socket drive.

If you look closely, you can see the broken end of the 1/4" drive in the plug.

Here I have the first few machining operations done, still got a few more to go. I'm going to drill it and tap it for an Autometer temp sender for when I get around to adding in an Autometer temp gauge.

After breaking a 1/4" socket extension off in mine, I welded a 1/2" nut to the top of the plug, filled the center and gave it a few coats of black paint.

And done! It's not perfect or as pretty as a CNC lathe could make it, but it seems like it'll work. Now I'm set to install the temp sender for the Autometer temp gauge when I decided to do that mod.

I really thought about doing the same, but I wanted a plug that could be drilled and tapped for a temp sender for the addition of an Autometer temp gauge. I thought about buying one from the various forum members who make them, but I figured what the heck and decided to try my hand at making myself.
