I'm all for shitting Boeing but I think this is a Shit West maintenance issue.
This is becoming an industry problem with hiring practices and all this DEI crap… the airlines are having to hire folks that they would never hired in the first place. Then to make matters worse they probably can’t fire shitty underperformers due to this woke DEI crap…You notice all the major US carriers are having issues with regard to maintenance.

The cowling was loose, they had full spoilers on as the flaps are definitely not "down 40" in landing configuration. IIRC the pilots were hesitant to use the flaps as one took a hit on takeoff as the initial piece of cowling ripped off and they didn't want to try and extend the flaps or slats and perhaps get in a situation where it would upset the aircraft so they came in hot/ slick.
Looks like once they hit the thrust reversers is when the remaining cowling was ripped away.
Here you can see them extended for takeoff configuration, after takeoff when they likely experienced some damage.
