what's the difference between google maps and google earth?

1) Download GoogleEarth
2) run Google Maps
3) see difference.

one is basically a digital globe that you can zoom in and out, move around in 3-dimensional space, etc. The other is a flat image thats great for printing directions.

Google Earth (AKA G.E.) has all the features the site GoogleMaps has, but in a 3-dimensional space. GE now also has fully mapped oceanography, fully integraded weather and traffic (where available) and Google Mars. Its also a crude flight simulator.

Looks more like some type of dig site where they were searching for something

guys, those "Roads" as they look, are 2.5mi wide. its 105mi x 75mi, its definitely not man made anything. If anything, id imagine its some sort of ghost image or faulty overlay.

btw, here are the coordinates you can copy-paste into GoogleEarth

31.443661, -24.389648

Hopes dashed as Google Ocean image of 'lost city of Atlantis' proves to be nothing of the sort

By Niall Firth

Last updated at 10:34 AM on 20th February 2009

It was the picture that seemed to show that the mythical lost city of Atlantis, more than 9000 years after it sank beneath the ocean's waves.

An apparently amazing photo on the front page of The Sun this morning appeared to show a grid system etched onto the ocean bed about 620 miles off the west coast of Africa.

But today the hopes of scholars and romantics alike were cruelly dashed as it was revealed that the photo, taken using Google's latest gadget, Google Ocean, had nothing to do with fabled lost city at all.

Sadly, a Google spokesperson confirmed that the mysterious criss-crossing lines were simply sonar data collected as boats mapped the ocean floor.

Lost city: Could these grid-like markings show the location of the lost city of Atlantis?

A spokeswoman said: 'It's true that many amazing discoveries have been made in Google Earth including a pristine forest in Mozambique that is home to previously unknown species and the remains of an Ancient Roman villa.

'In this case, however, what users are seeing is an artefact of the data collection process.

'Bathymetric (or sea floor terrain) data is often collected from boats using sonar to take measurements of the sea floor.

'The lines reflect the path of the boat as it gathers the data.

'The fact that there are blank spots between each of these lines is a sign of how little
we really know about the world's oceans.'

The grid system was found in an area known as the Madeira Abyssal Plane off the coast of Morocco, not far from the Canary Islands

The perfect rectangle was first noticed on Google's new underwater exploration tool by a British aeronautical engineer who claims it looks like a 'man-made aerial map' of a city.

Atlantis experts said that the unexplained grid is located at one of the possible sites of the legendary island, which was first described by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato.

The earliest known records of this mythical land appear in Plato's 'dialogues', Critias and Timaios.
Plato described it as an island 'larger than Libya and Asia put together'.

Dr Charles Orser, curator of historical archaeology at New York State University said that the site was 'one of the most prominent places for teh proposed location of Atlantis.'

'Even if it turns out to be geographical, it definitely deserves a closer look,' he told the Sun.

Bernie Bamford, 38, of Chester who spotted the unusual grid-like markings compared it to the plan of Milton Keynes, the Buckinghamshire town built on a grid design.

The lost city of Atlantis has captured the imagination of scholars for centuries.

According to Plato's account, written around 355 BC, Atlantis sank to the bottom of the ocean in around 9600BC - by our modern-day system of dating.

Atlantis was an incredibly prosperous and beautiful city and the Atlanteans were a highly advanced civilization with hot and cold running water and a developed social order.

Many people believe that Plato's story is historically accurate but that he simply got his geographical facts wrong.

As a result, the search for the fabled city has spanned the globe.

Sunken: The city of Atlantis was once a major civilization many thousands of years ago

Other experts believe that the story of Atlantis sinking into the ocean may reflect ancient Egyptian records of a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Thera (now known as Santorini) in about 1500BC which severely damaged the island of Crete.

Google Ocean is available for free by downloading the latest version of Google Earth from the Google homepage.

This latest version of Google Earth lets people plunge beneath the sea, swim around underwater volcanoes, hover above shipwrecks and navigate mountains on the sea bed.

The software also shows protected areas of the ocean and lets people follow the movement of sea animals tagged with satellite trackers.

If You Have Google Earth

type in 31-28.00N / 24-21.00W

3.5 Miles down on the Ocean floor. Has me wondering what made it. It is 105 by 75 miles across.

Hmmmmm

For all the Non Google earth owners. Google Maps

..

I saw it myself, not sure why these guys can't.

Hey it's possible, hard to say. There are many former civilizations under water in the Mediterranean Sea.

What Ocean is this located in?

It does look like a city, but theres probably some kind of explanation. I used the google earth 'ruler' to measure it and its approximately 1000 sqaure miles with each "block" being about 100 square miles. Thats a pretty damn big to be a regular city.

WOW. Most scientists love to get up and dispell somebody else's discoveries. Who knows if it is or if it is not Atlantis. But still a great find.
