is there a write-up on doing a compression test yourself somewhere?
nothing particularly wrong in my engine, I just think I hear slight pinging sometimes.

Ah its simple, get one of your friends to help you, makes things a little easier. Take the sparkplug out of the cylinder your wanting to test. Screw in your compression tester. Make sure the throttle body is full throttle when cranking (prevents car from starting). Either by pedal or you can do it with your hand on the throttle body. Crank it a few times, get reading and reinstall sparkplug.

Or you could come down to MSX one of these days and we could help you with it.

Good luck. :)

you should see around 180 for each cyl.
some testers have a memory. so you can do it by your self.
and the needle will stay at its highest point.

You can go to your local auto part store and ask them for the compression tester and a remote starter. Then with the remote starter you can get the starter to turn over with out getting in the car. Then you dont have to worry about the car starting either.
