When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.

He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return"

It became very quiet in the room

C'mon guys! Please do a little research before blindly passing on information. Between this, the Hanoi Jane posts, HIV infected needles in pay phones, cell phones causing fires at gas stations, etc., etc., etc......

Yes Colin Powell said something like this, but it wasn't in England and he wasn't replying to the Archbishop of Canterbury. The words were spoken during Powell's address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on January 26, 2003. Please BOOK MARK THIS SITE AND USE IT AS REFERENCE WHEN POSTING THINGS OF THIS NATURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UM the content was still basically the same and that is what we were applauding. He wasnt in England true, but he was addressing the "Former" Archbishop of Canterbury. So for the most part it was right on and the small details that were different didnt change or alter the meaning of his reply.

but thanks for that most accurate heads up

It wasnt a hoax. The content was very similar, it was shortened to be to the point and the location was off a little. Still it was said by Colin and it was said in Europe and it was said to an Archbishop of Canterbury, albeit former!
