Clutch balancing

How many of you get your clutch/flywheel balanced? I have always done it on higher end situations, but I am being told by my vendor that it is unnecessary to balance a Mcleod RST to the flywheel. Mcleod recommends balancing, but again my vendor swears up and down that it isn't necessary. I would love to hear some opinions on this.

never even heard of it until recently when someone else posted after reading Mcleod's instructions. I don't recall seeing that in my RXT documents, I didn't and have had no issue.

I had never heard of it either until I installed a Mcleod Street Extreme on a 2000 GT. I didn't balance the assembly and had a serious vibration at 1,200 rpm's. Balancing fixed it. Just didn't know if it was a one off problem or something that needed to be done every time.

I've always heard you should have the pressure plate/flywheel combo balanced. My DYAD came balanced and has marks on it to make sure you keep it aligned. Another + of the DYAD over the McLeod

Had the RST, have the RXT both as a kit with the flywheel (ie balanced from the factory). The RST has the lightened steel and the RXT is a heavy steel. The RST definitely chatters more than the RXT probably because of the weight/type of flywheel. That's why I chose the heavy steel on the RXT. Both chatter at low rpm - easy to overcome with a little more gas pedal and not really a big deal. Seems normal from what I have read.

Chattering at high rpm however would seem be an install/balance issue.

Bringing this one back up because I decided to pull my trans to have my new McLeod balanced.

I'll make sure to post some pictures of what the machine shop had to do.

The machinists who took the assembly wasn't happy to see it. He said McLeod tends to be the worst and they take a lot of time.

I guess that's why they are charging me by the hour.

For a street car typically balancing individual components is enough (as McLeod does). Balancing the entire assembly together is more for a racing setup - or as eluded to earlier, there may be a setup issue. Being twin disc, not surprising.

I had to have a new McLeod Street Extreme removed from my 2000 GT and balanced because of a vibration at 1300 rpm's. The balanced cleared it right up. This is why I didn't take any chances with the twin disc McLeod on my Cobra. It cost me $60 each time for the balance. Worth the money to not have to do the install twice.

$60! I'm jealous because my local machine shop is hitting me with $165 an hour!

Got my flywheel and pressure plate back today.

The flywheel was 3 grams out.

The pressure plate was 11 grams out.

According to the machinist 3 grams 6 inches from center throws wither component out of balance.

This means both pieces were out. Makes you wonder if the flywheel was actually balanced since it's supposed to come that way.
