What method would you clean the intercooler that is under the blower?
I was thinking carb/break cleaner then let it soak in a bucket of simple green and water diluted.

Thoughts?

I've heard of people using simple green. I think there is a thread in the How to section.

Haven't done it yet, but brake cleaner sounds like the most sensible considering it dry and leave no residue.

Well I sprayed 2 cans of carb cleaner the first day. Still had black gunk in it. Sprayed 2 more the next day and let it soak in a bucket of super clean and now it's all bling bling!

I used carb cleaner on mine as well but it still wasn't flowing as well as it should. I took it to a diesel repair shop since they have a machine that cleans intercoolers. It only cost me $45 to have it cleaned inside and out and it looked and performed like new.

Is this necessary? How often? Is it something a weekend mechanic could do? How intensive is it and how long does it take?

Only do it when your upgrading your blower.

Just gotta pull the blower off. Took me 2 hours to do it the other day.

Tried Simple Green. Sure, I saw some oil residue come off it. Then I sprayed Brake clean on it and TONS of oil came out of the fins. Now she's clean.
