CD writing speed ?

Hey ya'll, what's the deal with the speed ratings on cdr, cdrw, dvdr, dvd etc? What's the difference between the different speed of discs? Can they be interchanged as far as 12x cd in a 8x writer for example?

I believe the rating is just a safety rating...as in this disc has been tested for a certain speed writing. If u use a 8x disc in a 12x drive@12x write speeds...it might not survive...lol. It probably will, but you can't sue for a new drive or something if the cd melts.
