You do have to worry. In So Cal, any cars 5 years or older need a California

smog to get a base sticker....I think it was to appease the tree-huggers

complaining about Military not being smog legal or the socialist state

of California. If you don't need a new DoD sticker likely GTG...until it expires..

Depends on which base you get it on. It is the base Co's discretion. The previous CO didn't require it. Anyways if the base requires it then, put the stocker on, get it smogged once and do what you want afterwards. Once you get the stickers it is game on.

This is directly off of the CHP website:

Registration and Smog Laws

A car registered in another state that has no smog devices is legal to drive in California as long as it is equipped as required in the other state.

Vehicles are prohibited from emitting excessive exhaust and will be cited for air pollution, even if the car is registered in another state.

So, if your car had smog devices on it (federal spec) it has to have them in CA as well.

EDIT: I'm just stating what the law says, I have been skirting/avoiding it for 5 years with no issue. If you get to a base that requires smog, you just have to know the right people.

I was one of those idiots that had LT's, O/R X and SLP LM1, cops gave me a hard time even tho i never drove like a dumb ass. Although i was never sent to the referee ( THANK GOD) i just went to my local police station and wrote the ticket off. I did have to put a catted midpipe and my stock ford mufflers. Now i run o/r X and regular magnaflow which are quite and dont disturb cops. My car dont pass smog at all anymore, so i just pay someone to do it under the table.

Great job on posting "you pay some one under the table to do your smog", with the pic of your car and license plate number on your sig. :kaboom:

If you are the state for more than 90 days, you technically have to comply. Even if your vehicle is registered out of state. The same goes for military that get stationed here (I'm one of them, thats how I found out).

Also, tampering with emissions devices is a FEDERAL crime, not state, so no matter where you are illegal is illegal, its just a matter of how hard the local law enforcement looks into it. For these cars that can make crazy power with the stock H pipe still on, I would consider using it. Better safe than a $10,000 fine.

That being said, I've been running completely illegal cars for years now here, and never got pulled over once. It seems like the majority of CA, if you don't drive like a moron you will be fine. They target loud imports a lot more than loud domestic cars. Also, you have to be careful of roadside smog stations. They are voluntary but if you choose not to do it the police that accompany them may want to take a look at your car since it is suspicious.

THIS. it doesnt matter what state you live in. its a federal crime and the penalty is $10k!! iirc! this is why most exhaust shops wont even touch your cats, and junkyards typically wont sell used ones. too much trouble/hassle involved.

with that being said, you're HIGHLY unlikely to ever get popped for it. especially in a cobra. if it was a little JDM rice burner then id be more leery.

i bought my cobra with off road bassanis out of state. it was loud as F! left the out of state plates on too :read: i got pulled over a few times for driving like a douche. never even got a ticket. they'd give me a minor warning and just ask me about the car lol. ONE time i got pulled over at about 2 am by LA Sheriff. older guy. he said i might want to watch out for CHP because they'd probably ticket me for the noise but he said he wouldnt. he then was asking all kinds of questions about how fast it was etc... lol. i eventually put the stock H back on because i really didnt care for how loud it was myself. i couldnt hear the blower whine at ALL with no cats. sounded like a nascar! :burnout:

it probably depends on where you live too. if you live in a big city where the cop will forget about you 2 minutes after he sees you, you'll probably be ok. but if you're in a smaller town then he's likely to remember you and keep seeing you. and pretty soon the "im just visiting" defense will start to wear thin.

but even if you eventually did get a ticket for out of state plates, or exhaust, just worry about it then. as for having to do it within a certain amount of days of youre coming to CA, lol, the dmv is so busy and out of it they'd have no clue. i even asked about this. the lady said its based on the honor system when they ask you when the car came into CA. actually, now that i think about it, i got a ticket for my car having out of state plates like a month after i bought it. from the good old CHP. i went to the court house and they said you can either fix it or just pay the $100 fine, so i paid the fine...

i sold my stock H pipe with the car or id let you use it. im sure there are others around, all over. and yes, you should pass with high flow cats no problem. no smog place is going to crawl under the car lol. they'll do a visual under the hood and if it has no codes and passes the sniffer (which it will), you're fine. high flows are only an issue for the federal violation part which isnt enforced on a regular level.

wow. that would suck.

with all this advice thrown out there by everyone take it with a grain of salt. plus, with the state being broke, cops are issuing tickets left and right! especially CHP (state police). not really an issue about smog but possibly if the car is too loud. when i was catless and would drive by a cop, id just upshift and take it easy until they were gone. car wasnt too loud then.

CHP are typically the anal cops who will get you for violations. no front plate, window tint, too loud, etc.. the stuff local cops will often not be concerned over.

and of course, above all else, be respectful if pulled over. you're much more likely to be let off if you are. have an attitude, or God forbid drive drunk, and they can really throw the book at you and make your car issues your worst nightmare. many of them are car guys and can appreciate a nice muscle/domestic car.

You don't have to buy a whole new midpipe. Just buy 2 highflow cats and weld them in.

California is eager to fine you a lot of your hard earned money.
As moonlt said, the state got wise a long time ago to everyone that was registering their cars in AZ to take advantage of their lenient smog laws.

Mobile smog checks do happen and the CHP are trained on what kind of emissions equipment should be on your car. If you are sent to a referee they will have their way with you and not even use lube.

I used to have a rice rocket, I have never seen a mobile smog stop. I have had my hood popped to see if i had carb eo stickers to make sure my modifications were legit. The catalytic converter law is new (in the past few years), where it has to be oem catalytic converter and cannot be from an aftermarket distributor. If it is your first time, you can get away with a 48 state catalytic converter, just have it done before coming to california as it cannot be installed or shipped here.
