Car & Driver (July 06) gave the GT500 a full road test. It got a good review but not great. They were not impressed with the acceleration to the point of being sceptical of the 500 bhp rating. They got the exact same acceleration (12.9@112mph, 0-100 in 10.3 sec) as they got in the '03 Cobra. The GT500 weighs 150 lbs more than the 03/04 (coupe to coupe), and has a bit larger frontal area (two inches taller, one inch wider). That seems to indicate that the GT500 has maybe 40? more horsepower stock to stock. In the same issue they test the new BMW M6 Coupe (only $106,000), also rated at 500 bhp and a touch heavier than the GT500 (same height, one inch narrower than the GT500) which did 12.4@ 121mph, 0-100 in 8.9sec.
They said the GT500 drove like it had a lot of weight in front and understeered a bit, other than that they had no handling complaints. Roadholding is a bit better than the '03/04, but it comes with 19 inch F1 Supercars which is probably most of the difference. Different sizes front and rear so you can't rotate.
Since the GT500 costs $7-10Gs (depending on options) more than the 03/04, without the '03/04's independent rear suspension or state of the art Lear seats, it doesn't seem to offer the performance value of the '03/04 SVT Cobra.
