The White House did not deny the authenticity of the tapes.

"The governor was having casual conversations with someone he believed was his friend," White House spokesman Trent Duffy said, referring to Bush.

What's stupid about this is that there isn't anything new on those tapes. Everybody already knows GWB used drugs, was a drunk, and did lots of shit before he got saved, so what's the big deal?

Now if they were reporting on the links between the guy who was paying Guckert to let it hang out in the White House and GWB/Rove then that would be a story.
