Can anyone explain to me exactly what each of the following is?

line boring,
boring
honing
decking.

I had thought if you were going with a brand new block you wouldn't need anything but balancing... i feel like i was wrong, is any of this something you could do yourself?

Any help is appreciated.

Boring is generally taking a cutter down a hole to make rough cuts. Honing is done with stones but and is slower but will allow you to sneak up to proper specs and will leave the proper surface finish.

Line means main crank bearing bores. Cutting them all in one setup ensures they are all in line. Cylinder is obviousy the cylinder bore.

Decking is machining the head gasket surface, this can be done by evenly taking off X amount from the existing surface or by referencing the main bearing bores to make sure the decks are parallel to the crank shaft center line (proper way).

Some new blocks require finish work, some new blocks are finish machined and some people don't think the factory finish machining is good enough so they will re-machine a machined block.
