So, in removing the tank, I managed to break the check valve at the end of the filler neck. Guess I should have cut the grommet like Ford said.

Does anyone know if this piece is important enough that the neck should be replaced or can I get by with it as it is (after I clean up the end of the neck)?

I suspect it is this valve that causes me to have to slowly put gas into the car - if I let the gas pump go at full speed, it will click off like it is full after a second or so. Truly a pain when it is 10 degress outside. If I don't need it I will be a happy camper.

Sounds like something was wrong with it to begin with if it were killing the pump nozzle when you filled up.

My car came from the factory with a broken off check valve. Could never figure out why the pump would never shut off when filling it up. Gas would splash out and all over the side of the car. :mj: It also had a strong gas smell when the tank was full.
Replace it, they're not very expensive.
