I was wondering how many people on this site are ase certified techs. I know alot of us love our cars but how many do it for a living too?

I had a few certs, let them expire. I might get them again just to look good on paper. They mean nothing except you can pass a multiple choice test and keep a job for 2 years.

The independent shops like them, but usually the dealers would rather you have factory certs.

^^^^ so you guys are saying if you can pass a multiple choice test and hold a job for 2 years you can pass a ASE test? I believe it takes more than just being able to pass a test. The way they word the questions can really trip you up. It takes real world experience not just book smarts to pass most of those tests.

I have all 8 ase to be a master, t2,t6 and l2 which are for diesel advanced diag. Which I had to have to be a ford master 5 years ago. Then they changed the rules and don't care about them any more. Yes if you can read a study guide, comprehend it and pass a test you can be certified. I am certified in Auto trans and have never pulled one apart.

I know a couple mechanics by trade and I will say this; the ones with factory certifications are far superior to the ones that went to a technical school and are ASE certified.

Funny enough I just had a debate with an ASE certified person about what constitutes a short block vs a long block. Their answer to that would surprise you.

It's the same in the aviation business. My father owned a repair and modification shop for 20 years and specialized in small and commercial aircraft. The guys that were good, didn't come from a tech school.

I'm master certified. It's a patch on my sleeve and resume material and nothing more. It's really a joke honestly. I was master certified at 20 with very little experience. I've never failed one of their tests. It looks good to customers and that's about it, people in the field know its pretty meaningless.

I was for diesel but I let them expire.

I built auto trans from the bare case up while I was in college. It was very easy once I got the hang of it. I used to cut the book time in half so often my boss would tell me to screw off for hours on end because I was running out of units to build. I thought it was funny.

I too think they're pointless. Most of it is memorizing specs which you can (and should) look up in a service manual anyways.

I heard from many that the ASE generally hurts you more than helps you getting employed for being over qualified and shops generally not wanting to pay the expected salary of one. Thats just what a few told me

I passed one test without opening the test booklet. I had a bunch of tests that night and wanted to go home. I just looked how many questions there were and filled in random circles, so yes they are that easy.

They do, some of the ASE certified guys expect a higher hourly rate because of the tests. Factory training will maybe get you that at a dealer, along with all the warranty BS work while the un-certified techs get the customer pay gravy work.

I am master certified (a1-a9) along with l1 (advanced level diag) l2 advanced diesel, c1 alternitave fuels, x1 under car specialist, c1 service advisor. I also have Honda "training" and ford certs. I believe any training and certs can help. I own 2 shops and require certs after a certain period of time.
