I will be getting a t56 magnum in the spring and have the choice between the 2.97 first gear with a .5 6th, or a 2.66 first with a .63 6th. I already have 4.10's in the car and still am mainly stock except a CAI and high flow cats and flowmaster mufflers. I was wondering if I would be getting too doggy of the line with the 2.66 first? I do like the fact that the 2.97 first also as a much lower 6th for highway use whereas the 2.66 6th gear is the same ratio as my 3650 I have now. I'm curious to hear what you all have to say.

I'm running the .5 6th and the 2.97 1st.. It's a great combo with 4.10's.. Although I'm going to be switching to 3.73's as 4.10's at my powerlevel is to much.. It's the best transmission and if you search in the 04 section it's been covered quite a bit.

Just having bolt ons, you will HATE the 1st gear in the 6 speed until you get more power. It will feel a bit lower than a 3.55 with your 5 speed. I would strongly recommend getting more power before getting the 6 speed unless you have big plans for power and the trans is crapped out anyway.

What he said. Use a driveline calculator and crunch the numbers. You'll be surprised at how much your first gear mechanical advantage drops.

My 00R T56 is equipped with a 2.97 first, and I've got 3.73's out back. This gives me exactly the same overall ratio in 1st as my old 3650 with the stock 3.27 gears, but I'm okay with that, because I have the twin screw, and I'm into the twisties, rather than drag racing.

I have 2.66 1st gear w/ 3.73's. I get 47mph out of 1st gear. I have 2 friends with bolt on Mach1's so we are all close in hp one has 4.30's w/ stock 3650 and my 60 ft = his. we are both on 315 DR's. I just launch at a higher rpm.

Anyway the close ratio has 2.66 1st and the wide has 2.97 1st
GO WIDE RATIO. It will be just like a normal 5 speed but with an extra hwy gear.

Just an fyi, lower rpms on the free do nothing except keep the exhaust noise down. I've been running an 03' 3650 for ten years now with 4.56's and still get 20+ mpg on the freeway. Yeah it's louder but who cares, I've smoked termi's off the line with my little 300+ hp.

If your looking to spend $3-4k to get essentially the same take off ability as stock then get the 2.97. If you want a faster car then get the 2.66. Wide ratio trannys are for HIGH hp cars, over 500.
