Ray, December is a difficult month because many/most cabins are closed for the season by the end of October. Including Lake George cabins. Those that are available are usually closer to ski country. Which means a long drive for you. I did, though, find a nice cabin in Weston, CT which is only a 40-45 minute drive. Very scenic. Out in the country. Click Here for more info. $175. a night. It's an air b&b so you have to go through an online process to connect with the cabin owner. Another one in Redding. Built around 1700. Connecticut Retreat (two choices below), a cabin and a neat treehouse. * Cabin * Treehouse If these aren't good, Google winter cabin rentals in CT, NY and MA and hopefully you'll find something within an hour drive of Waterbury.
