I have a Dell 1501 laptop that's about 2 years old, but it's pretty messed up/slow. It's my buddies laptop and he doesn't have the box or any of the stuff that comes with the computer. I am wondering if there is a way to restore the computer to the way it was out of the box. Is there anyway to get it back to that state? I don't care about any of the stuff currently on the laptop and don't want to put any of my stuff on here until it's fixed. I think it's full of viruses, but I'm not too knowledgable on the whole compture thing.

Thanks

Go to dells website, and you should be able to order a disk to reload the operating system. It should take it back to a stripped version, no extra accessories, or anything like that. Thats what i did on mine anyway. I have an Inspiron 6000.

I'll go check it out, It's free to get off their website right? I have to wait for it in the mail or is there a place to download it off their site?

Thanks!!

I wouldn't use any of the original software that comes with the computer anyway. It's full of bloatware that you don't need and more than likely, did not come with a standalone installation disk, just a restore disk.

See if you know anyone with the Windows XP installation disk and use the product key that is on the sticker under the laptop. This way you are still legally using the software.

I always just simply reformat the HD whenever that happens. Usually its every 2-3 years on average. If you frequent a lot of porn and online casino sites, it'll be about 1/2 that time.

I'm pretty sure since 2004 Dell has been no longer sending cds with their computers. Everything is on a partition on the hard drive. If I remember right, its ctrl+f11 or ctrl+f12 to get to that part of the partition.

You have to hit this when the computer starts up. A second after I hit the power button I usually start holding down the ctrl and hitting the f11 or f12 button every half second or so. If you do it too fast you can make the computer not recognize the keyboard.

This is true, but it is also your legal right to have a hard copy of the OS you paid for, so even after getting a pc from dell I go straight to dell chat support and bitch and moan about wanting a hard copy of my OS.

I basically tell them, hd's fail all the time, if my hd fail your stupid partition is useless, send me my cd's NOW. Well I dont belittle them but I make my point known and they 2 day the OS cd's over.
