Find one with good service records, and have it checked out by an independent shop. Maintenance is key on them, stay up on it and shouldn't give you as many headaches as others will claim.
one of the most reliable cars I owned was a '00 MB E320. I got almost 200K miles on it before someone decided to rear end me and total the car. The maintenance on it was easy. Oil changes were as simple as could be. Fuel filter was easily accessible. If you shop around, parts were cheap and easy to find. Of course it was for the smaller V6 engine in an engine bay designed for the much bigger V8. But I was always surprised at how well it was designed for the owners that like to DIY. I'm sure the E55 is a different experience.
The MB forums are just as plentiful and useful as SVTPerformance.com is for Shelby/SVT Cobra owners and Mustangs in general. Any issue you encounter you will more than likely have a "How To" describing how to correct the issue.
they are great cars. 05-06 easily the best years. they are bullet proof cars. air bag failures or SC pulley bearings are the main two issues. other than that they are awesome. get one.
Probably the only 10 year AMG I would consider buying. But, a tough drive train does not equal reliable and easy/cheap to maintain. The E seems to be easiest and cheapest in comparison to other cars like the SL55/CL55 etc.
Just sold a 2005 E500. it was a tremendous road car and will cruise all day long over 110 in Arizona. BBBUUUTTT maintenance and parts are expensive. At 75k miles had replaced all air system shocks/struts and motor and trans mounts. Various other parts replaced that you would not expect to have to deal with at such low mileage. All dealer and other german car specialists are not cheap and you just can't run to Autozone for all kinds of misc parts. Will NEVER buy another one unless brand new with an extended factory warranty and then never keep it after expiration. E55 special parts are even more expensive. Consider passing unless you have deep pockets or are a glutton for punishment. These cars are tremendous vehicles when all is right but resale values are low because a lot of people know about the cost of repairs and parts
I had a friend who came from money (huge house in CA, AMEX black card family, uncle owns a Lamborghini and Bentley, etc.)
They bought their 19 year old daughter a mid 2000's E55 and sold it a year later because even they were fed up with the repair costs.
That scared me off from AMG's, considering this girl comes from MONEY.
They are considered the depreciation kings for a very good reason. You'll find out the Germans aren't as good at building cars as we all think they are. I almost bought one but opted for a V instead because everyone I knew was trying to get rid of their AMG's due to the maintenance nightmares they were having.
Just did a clutch on one, I wouldn't say that's far off. Employee cost on a flywheel is $1200.
I think the dealer charges $4500. Everything on that car is designed to be replaced as soon as you touch it... So many rounded and broken bolts.. Never again.
Yeah, they're money pits, but cost can be offset if you do your own maintenance. Too many special parts, like the supercharger clutch (what?!? - supposed to engage supercharger only above certain RPM to save gas) that fails and needs replaced. Cost last time I checked a couple years ago was over $900. If I remember correctly, it squeals, whines, and chirps if it goes bad. Plus the supercharger doesn't work...
All that said, they're freaking fast cars, but not the most driver friendly. Love the seats (especially if they have the cooling option), and it's a 4-door sedan that looks nice. That said, I'd rather save the coin and buy a 335i, then throw a larger air-to-air intercooler and Cobb tune at it. Parts are cheaper, and most of the easy-to-wear items can be swapped in your garage.
Out all the German cars MB is the most reliable in my opinion. They are able to go 200k with no problems. I wouldnt call them money pitts there parts just cost a ton of money.
BMW is easily the worse, which is why they are the most leased.
Motor in my srt-6 is a supercharged 3.2 built by amg. Its similar to the v8 just missing 2 cylinders, maintenance rise ive done my own up keep on it. The supercharger water pump went out they are about 100 bucks, a CPS died another $100 and the bearing went out on the pulley so I put a smaller pulley on there for more boost. My RCM burnt up the air pump fuse and killed my air pump $200 for a new rcm and I had to find a used air pump $250. It is at 170k now.
