We just got back from the south island and since it was winter there the roads were wide open . We spent 7 days driving a "campervan" and loved every minute of it. The campervan is the way to go in my opinion because daylight does not dictate your day as much. When we went to Milford it was raining and the place was so cool with all the waterfalls but we wanted to see it in the sunshine so we decided to camp on the other side of the tunnel and go back the next day. I would go back tomorrow. Enjoy your trip!!
