I know we have been over this a thousand times but.....I'm at my 1500 miles mark and am going for my second oil change...in a few weeks i'll be making a long trip doing about 700-1000 miles....is it wise to stay with the mineral 5w-20 until about 5000 miles or is it ok to now go with the Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic....i read another thread that said to wait for higher mileage before switching...any suggestions....thanks

I used to think otherwise (I was one of the ones waiting until ~5K to switch) and I have spoken to many, many people about it -- many board members and my mechanic. It's fine to go to synthetic @ 1000-1500 miles. This is my opinion and I think I have spoken to 12+ people about it. They all agree... stock oil (5w-20) for the break in and then go to Mobil 1 (5W-30).

Lethals friends are right - the reasons are that oil rings are much lower pressure now, and the cylinder bore tolerances tighter - this allows the rings to seat by 500-800 miles, so 1500 is a good rule of thumb. I concur that 5w30 or 0w30 are the way to go.

... and you were the final decision maker for me Cobra'03. Since you were a lubeologist (porn?) you restated with complete fact behind it everything they told me.

Kudos to you.
