After-market chips and emissions testing?

Just read that Pennsylvania is going to replace tail pipe/dynamometer emissions tests with OBD II readouts in high pollution counties, such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas. Will apply to 1996 and after cars.

Anyone know technology of this, and whether this might be a problem with after market chips?

shouldn't be a prob....chip doesn't change the whole computer....just changes the settings the computer uses

Often times ODBII scanners cant retreive vehicle VIN# when a chip is installed, not sure if that will throw a red flag or not.

The AutoTap people said their scanner can't read a Ford's VIN period, chip or no chip.

They do that in MD now. Before you take it in check for p1000 code. It means pcm has not had enough driving cycles on it. Sometimes you can get this with a chip. If so they can't read the vin at least with the equiptment in MD they can't. If they can read it the test should be no problem.

Rick or anyone else,

Do you know what is being tested with this new procedure? Is it a dynamometer driving simulation with monitoring of OBD II variables, or is it merely a historical reading of stored data?

Hear alot of guys with SES lights on with exhaust changes, and use of MIL eliminators. Would expect cars with that situation, or perhaps cars with 2 rather than 4 convertors in new X pipe to have problems.
