I am curious is the 98 cobra rear end a ford 9 inch? If it is thats sweet. If its not how does the strength compare to a gm 10 bolt? I ask this because I never really hear about cobra owners upgrading their rear ends but lots of camaro owners puting in 12 bolt rears.

The cobra rear-end is a ford 8.8. Not *as* strong as the 9 but still a stout rear. The GM 10-bolt is garbage. I've seen guys break them in stock cars. Now given, the LS1 powertrain is no slouch, but the rear-end is still weak. It's been said that anything under 2.0 60's is playing russian roulette with that rear-end. A friend of mine who works for quarter mile performance has been thru more than 10 in his turbo T/A.

Unless they changed something from 97 to 98 it's a Ford 8.8 rearend. If you upgrade to a higher spline count axle you should have no problems. A friend of mine was putting 1500+ hp to an 8.8 and it never broke, the only thing he did was weld some reinforcement on the housing and had upgraded internals.
