my 1996 cobra will not start. it cranks good but doesn't even try to start. I got it to start once after holding my foot down on the gas pedal. after it started this way I could rev it but after letting off the gas it quickly dropped in rpms and died. I just got back from a 2400 mile round trip and it might of got bad gas in it, so I will change out the fuel filter first. any other thoughts on what to check? I might be able to hook my a fuel pressure gauge I have sitting around.

If it wants to start with your foot on the throttle - it's flooded. All EFI cars have a "de-flood mode" which disables the fuel injectors if the throttle is 75%+ while cranking. So, basically your engine only wants to start when the injectors aren't working which means it is flooded. How it got flooded is the question.

Poor fuel quality (which a filter isn't going to help with)
Leaking injector
ECT/CHT input issues
I've seen biased MAF sensors cause flooding but everyone tells me MAF is ignored while cranking...
CKP irregularities (RFI from your ignition/charging system)

These are things I would try.
