96-98 short block in 01 cobra?

as the title states. will a 96-98 short block be ok for my 01 cobra? i would just be using the short block.

Yes, it will work. If it came from another Cobra it should be fine. Those are the only short blocks I know of that will have the eight bolt crank you require. You will have to change out the nipple behind the water pump. You can use the Mustang GT nipple from 99 to 04. They are cheaper. I would also consider upgrading to a larger oil pan like a Canton while you are at it as I assume it was a spun rod bearing like mine that took out the engine.
