Looking to upgrade the clutch system what is the flywheel?157 or 164 tooth? Thanks Stan

Should be the bigger flywheel and therefore the 164 tooth... thats what a 87-up 5.0 comes with so I doubt it was down graded to the smaller flywheel on a 5.8

The '95R flywheel size is 157teeth, steel billet, 28.?oz balance. The clutch size is 10.4" or referred to as a 10 1/2" clutch and pressure plate.
All V8 Mustangs with a standard trans. from '79-'95 had 157tooth flywheels. Automatic V8's had 164tooth flywheels. Some with the 50.?oz external weight, and some with 28.?oz external wieght. All 5.8L(351ci) eng. had a 28.?oz balance.

Gene,

The 86 & older 5.0 Mustangs had a 10" clutch & the 87-95 have the 10 1/2" clutch

In '81 Ford went to the 50oz imbalance on 5.0 and the 5.8 remained the same 28oz imbalance as the 80-earlier 5.0/302

forgot to add in above..... the 157 tooth is correct for the 5.0&5.8 The 4.6 uses the 164 tooth in its manual application.

So Stan you will need the 157tooth 28oz imbalance flywheel that accepts 10 1/2" clutch if you want a factory type replacement. Some of the aftermarket flywheels have bolt patterns for both 10 1/2" & 11" clutches if you feel the need to go bigger. Or you could go with one of the multidisc clutch setups for less rotating weight if you want to spend close to a grand on a flywheel/clutch set up.

Dayrl,

You are correct. I forgot about the 10" clutch in the older 5.0's.

I'm thinking that you can put a 10 1/2" in place of a 10", or is that only in the 289ci days?

I don't know what it is, but I have one in the garage that looks like new. I can provide any details as my OEM unit is out of the car now.

Anyone who needs one, please let me know.

Bruce
