So what is the best way to clean out the inside of the lower intake manifold? It's kind of nasty down there from what I can see with a flashlight. I just don't want to take the risk of any silicone being left in the manifold from removing the old gasket. I also do not want to remove the imrc plates.

I used brake cleaner, but for your purpose, how about some of those wide pipe cleaners + brake cleaner?

Also which of the imrc plates are the better ones the plastic that are on my 98 manifold or the metal ones that are on my 96 manifold? The plastic one seems impossible to clean the silicone off of. And what is the story with that Groove going all the way around it silicone is packed into

Well I think what they did was used the gasket from the metal imrc C which was a hard plastic gasket. Apparently the gasket for the plastic imrc is soft rubber so they packed the groove for the gasket flush with silicone so they can use the wrong gasket I think that's what happened but I do know that there's different gaskets for 96 97 and 98 is different

You can use kerosene to clean the sludge/oil. Just keep it away from any silicone or rubber. The epoxy that holds the intake pipes together shouldn't be affected by it - but I would double check online.

I've read that the 98 are the better, but I don't see why really. I cleaned my IMRC plates with soap and water on my 98. I also used brake cleaner for my intake manifold. It was very dirty and had a lot of oil in it and it came out great. Here's a before and after picture of my IMRC plates and my intake manifold.
