How many of you had a problem with 4.56 gears hitting the rear end cover?

Who had no issues with this?

Yes I'm thinking about a set of these for my car that has 3.90's.

Don't you grind something down to make it fit? Thats what I was told?

I hope I don't have to buy a new girdle...

Another option is chipping a tooth off the ring gear if you don't want to grind the crosspin. This is how the shop did mine.

I also wasn't too happy my bill went up almost $200 because I needed the girdle:bash:

You could also cut out the middle and weld in a whole new section to clear it easy. And add a drain plug at the bottom.

Most on here aren't too interested in that sort of thing though. I'd definitely consider it.

A proper girdle though will also give you additional strength. Food for thought..

I wonder if the clearance issues are more a problem with IRS cars? Or is it any of them?

Also, which girdle would provide the clearance? The FRPP one?

I have a sra and had clearance issues. Any aftermarket girdle should provide clearance.

Okay, thanks!

I'd like to use a Ford part, will the Ford girdle clear?

Too bad I might need it just for clearance, it's not like I need the strength from the low amount of torque I'm not able to plant. :burnout:

I definitely wouldn't even ponder the thought of grinding dwn the OEM diff cover. When you remove it you'll see why.
The girdle are thicker for a reason. 4.56s + thin diff cover isn't a good match imo. You need all the strength you can get.
Plus, you'll grind right through the oem cover, no doubt.

Oh yea I've removed plenty of them and know how thin they are.

But if it was just barely a rub it could be shaved a little.

As for strength, I don't believe the stock cover is a structural componant at all. Even with 4.56 gears and slicks, I don't think my 265 RWTQ is going to break anything.

If I decide to go 4.56 instead of 4.30 I'll get a girdle and if I don't need it, I suppose I could send it back.
