26 Spline endplay questions

After gathering parts one by one as we needed them for installing on jakes car, we have finally gotten it all and started the install. On measuring the endplay with a magnetic base mount dial I get .003 endplay in and out. BUT I can move the shaft up and down which shows .005-.009 on the gauge. Does the up and down play go in to factor or is it ignored while just going off pushing in and out.

The write up is very helpful as we used it to install the TOB sleeve. It just didnt go into checking the endplay really deep so I still dont feel right about the play in Jakes. I have the factory .0032 shim in it now and it has zero end play as best to my skills.

Why not get the one that fits without having to measure?
