It’s entirely possible to improve the handling on the S197 to god like levels and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Even a ‘68 can have >1G cornering if you want it to

Maybe I should consider trying to keep mine and upgrade the suspension - perhaps Griggs or similar for the rear.

If I HAD to get a newer Mustang, it would be a GT350. Like you, I think it looks better than the new GT500, but still not as good as our cars. They rev forever, without ever planting you in your seat like our cars do - right off the line and through the entire power curve. They sound good, but I'm not smitten by the FP. They handle better than ours, but I couldn't tolerate the loss of HP and TQ. The bottom line is that, since I don't HAVE TO get a newer Mustand, I probably never will. At our elevation, you should think twice and make sure you're not going to miss the ax-murderer you know when you "upgrade" to a purse snatcher you just met.
