It's a 4WD model, really clean, for a little under 6k... Anyone have any experience with these things? I wasn't even looking at Escapes...heck, I wasn't even really looking for SUVs, and I saw how clean this freaking thing was and have been considering it all day...

Reliability? Mileage? Maintenance issues? Any comments appreciated, thank you!

Before I bought my Cobra I owned an 05 Escape, fully loaded but FWD instead of AWD. I liked it a lot, a small SUV with a bit of pickup. Plenty of space, comfortable, and you get that safe in a truck feel without being TOO big.

But 6k for a car with 100k miles seems like a bit much to me. What options does it have?

Be careful with the transmissions on those things. They go and they aren't cheap. To rebuild one properly takes a lot of updates. Labor is a lot too. When I do one here the bill usually is $2000-$2500.

We had a 04 fwd with about 60,000 miles on it and the biggest things replaced were the tie rods and front rotors and pads. Got a 08 4x4 with 20,000 and haven't done anything except change the oil so far.

I've driven a 01 escape that we got about 3 years ago with around 70k miles at that point and haven't had any troubles. However it hasn't really seen many real long mileage trips, or a ton of miles either. I like it, it's nice to have the 4wd option around here, I usually got between 15-18 mpg depending how I was driving in city.

Thanks for the replies, gents! The tranny issue sounds kinda scary and I'm about to check that link you provided, Dave. Thanks again!

Did you really have to make a new thread for this?

Since the other thread was about wagons and cars, and I wanted to get specific information on a specific vehicle... Yeah. Want a hug?

I'm assuming its the 3.0L Duratec? Very low maintenance engines.

My woman has an Escape (2003, 3.0L V6) w/ 93k or so on it now. Very reliable car.. only 1 casualty thus far: alternator. Recommend.

*Oh.. make that two casualties - the front disc brakes were completely trashed at 40K. Replaced the pads & rotors with stuff from the local auto part store and there is still plenty of pad left nearly 60K later.
