I was going back and forth between the 305/45/18 MT and the 305/35/20 MT. Both are the same overall height. I called MT to see if they could tell me if there weould be a measurable difference in traction and they said "no, none at all" due to the radial construction. I went with conventional wisdom and bought the 18's anyway. They don't look bad, but I am tired of the mis-matched look and plan to go to the 20" MT's and just commit to something even more serious when all out traction on the street is needed. I would go with the 1" wheel diameter difference. I don't think that is too much. I would just be careful to keep the tire heights in check.

I doubt that helped, but anyhow.
I haven't had time to read all of the responses. Like Sedanman mentioned, I have 20's up front with 255/40's (28.0") and 18x10's in the back with 305/45/18 MT's (28.9"). It has worked well for my auto combination on the street and track. :D
