So My whole life I have always wanted to ride in a tank or be an Mp. So I am torn between the two jobs. For those who dont know 19K is Armor crewmember and 31B is Military Police. Both in which just happen to be on the national guards active first program. (Got 4 years in active army then you can decide to sign again or drop off into the national guard. Its to help the army get recruits since they arent meeting goals) So I was wanting some in sight if any of you have actually done either one of these Mos', or are currently doing one of these. Please no replys saying not to join ect... I am Joining have always wanted to and been a dream of mine. So why not go for my dream =).

What are the pro's and cons of both? Which do you want to do MORE? Riding in a tank = possibility of being blown up. Military Police = ....policing a base I guess? Not 100% on that one lol. I'd say go for whichever you think will make you happier, whichever you would enjoy more. I gotta give you props, I could NEVER join the military, I'm too much of a pus lol.

Haha well its my understanding Mps do alot of things besides policing a base. Have a friend who went to iraq and was actual infantry type work there. Or police type work I guess too since your patroling the streets ect. I just want to pick the one I will like as a career since I plan to stay in the army till I retire if I can handle it. Thanks

If I were in your shoes, I would select armor for sure. Those are awesome machines. Seriously, all that it would take for you to make your decision is to look at some M1 videos on youtube of those steel beasts!

question so when it comes down to it will you be signing with the national guard?
i guess my question why bother with the national guard? that is if you want to go in why not just sign with the army? you can always go NG if you choose to after.
another question is what are the career paths when you get out? (assuming you do)
have not looked into the help wanted section but i assume tank driver is not that popular.
If i was going to be a mp i would join the airforce i hear they got it good.

good luck either way.

Of those two, I'd go Armor. Both are a decent MOS', and both will deploy. The Army MP's that I know are in Iraq doing patrols. MP has an easier transition to civilian life, if you want to stay law enforcement, otherwise they're about the same.

I'd like to say "Be a man and join the Marines", but that's not the nice thing to do.

But I surely wouldn't tell you not to join up; It's a wonderful thing for a young man to do. It will change you, and make you a much more worldly person. I know it did for me.

So your question is if you should go into tanks or MP..... Well, look it from the long run.

I was an 0352 in the Marines - Or TOW gunner, which is a small tank missile that takes out tanks (etc). Not exactly a lot of jobs outside of the military for that kind of job.

Go MP. You'll have a lot more options when you get out.

Either way, good luck.

6 year MP right here, and I loved it.

Alot more options when you get out. As far a beening a street cop on base, well dont get your hopes up, garrison units (street cruisers) are being replaced by civilian contracts. All MPs are now pretty much Combat MP's,..

Aside from Special Forces, I wouldnt have picked anything else.

MP academy/school/bootcamp with be about 5 months in Ft Leanordwood MO,..

DO IT

Besides, how ****ing GAY is this

im joining within the next week, already have my ASVAB and everything so im good to go. But look at whats available and take the most challenging IMHO, im doing one of the 96 (undecided) MOS's for sure. Do what you can do man, whatever is needed because not alot of people meet qualifications and people need to sand up

EDIT: oh and for the Special Forces i can only dream, my brother is a CW5...so envious haha

I was Military Intel- but was "attached" with 1st Cav (Buffalo Soldiers) and 6th Infantry (sister unit to Berlin Brigade) for most of my time.

Tooling around in a Armored Vehicle is fun- but after the fun comes cleaning and fixing them.

As for MP.. don't know much about them.

My choice would be that new Stryker Vehicle- which would come under Armor.

MP's!

I was military police for 4 years and loved it. I was a traffic accident investigator, a patrolman, and also deployed, doing security, patrols and escort missions. After it was over I personally felt like I did a lot of great things and did my part in the Army. I can't comment on the 19k but 31b is a great MOS in my opinion.

mp's do close protection witch is awesome, that can take you alot of places... tanks are cool but can get old fast. Just from my exp, i'd go MP. But if you are young cant you do both just remuster to MP later in your career? i'm canadian army so you guys have different rules

My drill seargent at LTC was 11bravo but then switched to MP. He was in Afghan. for a tour as an MP and he said all he really did was escorts.

MP's probably fourth on my list. I really want Aviation.

Im stationed in southern Iraq and down here there aint much to being a MP pretty much policing the base, our MP's dont go out that much but usually its just to train the IP (Iraqi Police), and for bein a tanker..I'm in 2-12 Cavalry, we where 4th ID 3-67 Armor, nothing but tanks but about 3 months after i got here they took all our tanks and made up a Cav unit, now all our 19K's are just Infantry, so if i was you i would suggest 11B (Infantry) or 11C (artillery), can't go wrong with being an infantry man. And no offense to all the MP's that are reading this but MP's are kind of a joke at Ft. Hood, no one really likes um lol, however you have to respect um' but thats pretty much how it is with any law enforcment, but if you dont wanna be infantry I'd do MP. Just my .02

not true, light infantry.
Mp's are infantry for the most part in country.
being infantry myself, nothing makes me feel safer than the sound of a Abrams or an A10. i would love the chance to be inside one of them, but it's really up to you. try to talk to some people currently serving in either MOS in person, stop by a unit someday and ask them questions

why not do what you want to do, not take a poll of what people on svtp think you should

all in all its great you've chose to join the military, the comments about the "you'll never find a job in the civilian world if you're a 19k" is hog wash, I applied several places when I got out of the Army and every last one called or sent letters back (from the police department to the power company). Do what YOU would like to do, I can't sell you on your career path, but I definitely can give you insight on what the job is all about.
