We are currently on 5 8's but many are wanting to test 4 10's. I just read an article (which circulated on social media) about Baltimore (I think that's who it was), going to 10's. We have tried this before, but, we only used 3 shifts, not 4 like Baltimore. We have approximately 90 commissioned officers who work in patrol. Any suggestions?

My dept went to 10 hour shifts..with a 4th shift coming on at 16:00 hrs..to have extra officers at the peak crime hours..Initially it was miserable, but we did not rotate shifts like other depts. did and got used to it. We would rotate after six months if the officer wanted to do so. Fortunately my dept went back to normal and I was able to finish law school while I worked nights..And my 3 days off were spent at school or working part time jobs.

We are 4 on 4 off for 3 weeks, then 5 on 4 off for weeks. Shifts are 2100-0700, 0700-1600, 1600-0200.

I like it

We are on a modified 4-10 shift with rotating days off, set up on 7 "watch-off" schedule; so the days off advance one every week which allows at least one weekend day off after a 3 week, mid-week, day of schedule. Here is a sample of our Watch-off calender from our Asian Peace Officer Association: http://www.sfapoa.org/calendar/calendar.html

Our officers here work 4 10s. I work on the civilian side, but as my section has a lot of contact with officers in the field we went to 4 10s almost a year and a half ago. I freaking love it. We had nine hour shifts when I first started, with an alternating third day off/eight hour day connected to our two RDOs. After the economy collapsed and tax money dried up we went to 8s for four and a half years. If we go back I'll cry.

That's the schedule I work as a Paramedic. 10 hour shifts sound ridiculous in any position requiring 24 hour coverage, why would you forgo having the practicality of a set schedule just to cut your shifts 2 hours short?

At my company we are always on 4 10's. I love it due to the fact that we are given the option to work friday and saturday as time and a half if we want, if not then that is ok also. I could not imagine going back to an 8 hour day. Its nice since the day goes by quickly, but id rather have that friday off if i wanted.

We have 12s 4on 4off 3 weeks, then 2on 2off.
We have a Div. that works4 10s 4on 3 off
We have a Div. that works 8.5s 5on 2off

Another agency within our county does 10s 8on 6off, 3 shift rotation. I have yet to hear of them complaining about it!

Im on the 5/8.5s and working toward the 4/10s! Bc 4on 3off is whats up!

I love 4 10s. The extra day is well worth the extra 2 hours a work day.

My department is on 8's with talks of going to 10's or 12's. We worked 12's during the Ferguson ordeal and the extra hours were definitely worth it for the extra days off. Too bad we went back to 8's.

We have about 90 officers as well and would run 3 shifts. The issues we'd run into are that the department would either have to buy more cars or start riding doubles.

We work 4/10's with 3 shifts (0700-1700, 1500-0100, 2100-0700). Our shifts are for 6 months at a time with set days off (four days on, three days off) and bid by seniority. With a larger agency such as ours, it makes sense with our overlap days being our "hole night" where they slot us in wherever they need us (once every other week). We have enough teams where there are overlap days everyday.

It sucks as a new officer to not have any weekends off for years (excluding vacation days), but down the road it pays off where it would suck being a senior officer and still have to work weekends. There's no perfect system, each has their advantages.
