Supercar driver hit with world record speeding fine of £650k

Aug 13 2010 By Donna Watson

A DRIVER has been hit with a world record £650,000 speeding fine.

The 37-year-old was travelling at nearly 186mph in his Mercedes SLS supercar when cops pulled him over in Switzerland.

At other points in his journey, the Swede was going so fast that police radar gear was unable to clock him.

Traffic cops said he was travelling so fast it took him 500 metres to stop his £150,000 six-litre car.

After being stopped, the cheeky driver told officers: "I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty."

In Switzerland, fines for speeding vary depending on the driver's income and how fast they were going.

He faces the highest possible penalty of £650,000 after being convicted of the country's worst speeding offence ever.

A police spokesman said: "We have no record of anyone being caught travelling faster in the country."

The driver was captured at two-and-a-half times the speed limit but his top speed is unknown because most speedguns are incapable of clocking speeds above 125mph.

He was finally snared by a speed camera on the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne last week.

Police released the unnamed man after questioning.

Cop Benoit Dumas said: "He needed over half a kilometre to come to a halt."

Maybe he should just not pay the ticket and stay out of Switzerland?

they'd probably make him pay before he can leave.

they mentioned on top gear that Switzerland has some amazing roads but you'd be crazy to speed through there.

the previous speeding ticket record was also there iirc.
