Well, I'm sure some of you guys have been getting annoyed at all the questions some of us newbies have posted lately about certain mods and which are better,etc. Well, I have a good reason for my questions. :-D

A friend of mine with an 02' cammed C5 with headers, pullies, and exhaust which dynoes at 390rwhp is coming to visit me in 2 weeks. I haven't seen the guy in a long time and he heard I just bought an 03' cobra and wants to race. We both used to have 99' cobras and raced all the time back in the day but now he went to the dark side and I finally got something worthy of a race for him. ;-)

Anyways, I wanted to increase my chances with him and not get blow away with this stock cobra. So, I ordered a tri-ax, Borla Stinger catback and today I'm ordering a set of 315-35-17" nitto dr's for the rear. I'm also currently trying to figure which CAI to go with to help out also.

This guy is an excellent driver and will make the most of his weight difference and he runs nittos as well. What do you think my chance are? And are these mods I have purchased going to make enough difference to put me over the top?

Oh, and I don't have a camcorder to record this race but I am thinking of buying on if I can find one reasonably priced. Who makes a good one?

I can't let this guy beat me and not see him again for over a year. He lives about 8 hours away. So, it might be my only chance to race him.

My car ran a 12.35 @ 115.4 with Steeda CAI, Magnaflow catback, on stock F1s with my buddy powershifting and a 12.48 @ 114.89 with me granny shifting on a 1.99 60'.

I would say with just a CAI and catback you should be making 400rwhp in a car that weighs 3700# compared to his 390rwhp in a car that weighs 3200# - You have your work cut out for you.

My advice:

Order a 2.8 pulley with a 73.5" Gatorback belt from SFPHQ.

While you are at it - order a Steeda CAI and Predator tuner from James at RWTD - he will install a custom tune for you for free.

You can ask him to send you my tune (same mods) - safe with a 11.5 a/f across the board and it made 447rwhp/452rwtq SAE.

The Nitto DRs are on national backorder from what I have heard so I just ordered BFG DRs 275/40/17 (they hook better but wear out quicker than Nittos).

This combo with powershifting and a decent launch should go low to mid 11s or mid-high 11s granny shifting - enough to beat a cammed & exhaust C5 easily.

Hope this helps,

Howard

I can match him driver for driver, hopefully drag radial for drag radial and 390ish rwhp for both cars if the CAI and Stingers add up to 390+ on my car but the weight seems to be the issue. I really don't want to do much more than what I've already mentioned as far as HP but would be willing to listen to other ideas. For right now I don't want to pully the car (only have 1k miles on her) because I would like to keep the warranty a little longer. But a predator tune might be the answer if it's not detectable once its removed. How much horsepower can picked up with the predator with no pulleys?

I agree.

Unless the 'vette is an auto with 2.73 rear end you have no chance. You will need about 450 rwhp to keep it even with him due to the weight difference.

ET = ((Weight / HP).333) * 5.825 (that's to the power of .333)

For your friends Corvette, provided it’s a coupe, here’s what he SHOULD run:

ET = ((3245 / 390).333) * 5.825

ET = 11.8 @ 115 mph.

Use this link to make it easier:

http://www.race-cars.net/calculators/et_calculator.html

for the Cobra, according to Edmunds weighs 3,700 lbs. you would need 450 rwhp to beat him by a tenth.

Of course this formula assumes equal gearing… etc.

Bottom line is U R gonna need a pulley and tune to beat him, U know U R going to pulley it sooner or later, I say go ahead and do it or he will pull you pretty bad with just a CAI and Exhaust! Put a 2.80 on it with a tune from Amazon and U will have him surprised without a doubt!

I agree with everyone else. Just go with a proven formula and go with a pulley, Predator, intake, exhaust, and DR's. If you're on a budget, just pulley(2.80), chip (Predator) and CAI it. That should be plenty of insurance foR well under $1000.

Assuming equal drivers your gonna need a pulley to pull on him as other's have said. 390rwhp and 3200lbs is a pretty lethal combo for a CAI @ exhaust 03 making the same numbers.

I was making 399rwhp on my stock heads and was able to pull a bone stock 03 by 4-5 lenghts from 60-130 roll.

As much as I would like to beat this guy, I've just decided I don't want to rush a pulley and chip combo, I was to ease into that. Even it means losing to this guy now. He is a good friend of mine but we always used to talk trash amongst our group of friends. He knows coming in he can smell blood with me being mostly stock. But we are going to race from a stop and a roll, so I'm hoping to surprise him from a stop. As of today, I've already purchased a Steeda CAI & tri-ax, Borla catback and Nitto 315-35-17 DR's (online tires still have them in stock if you guys are wondering). I might look into a predator, but I've noticed they are on back order. So, it looks like this is it for now as far as mods. If I have to let the air out of his rear tires when he is not looking I will (Just kidding ;-)). But I won't go down easy....

Also I talked to him again and he said his last dyno was 379 rwhp, he told me 390 to see how I would react. Not much difference there If you ask me.

A Z06 is 3200 lbs. A C5 Coupe (M6)is about 90lbs heavier an auto even heavier. But either way he still has a weight advange on you.

I had a 99 C5 Coupe with intake and exhaust, NO cam or headers. put down about 320 to 330 to the wheels and I beat up on a couple of non pulleied 03's.

You are going to need a 2.8 and a tune or its not going to be close, drivers being equal as you say.

Well I'm sure you guys saw my video a long time ago. I have all the mods in my SIG and my good buddy has an 02 SS with cam, ligenfelter heads, different intake, computer re-programmed, 12-bolt rear with I think 4.11 gears. His best run on street tires is 11.81 and when we raced, it was the closest race I've ever had. I'm going to race from a stop very soon with him. Heres the link to the video anyhow.

Thats estimated flywheel, around 440-450 at the wheels I'd guess. Not sure of weight. He also has other small motor work done, not exactly sure though.

come on guys, you're telling me I'm gonna get my butt handed to me. I'm gonna hate that.....

Also forgot to mention he is a USMC about to go on 30 days leave before MSG duty so we are going to head down to his hometown of Sarasota/Punta Gorda,FL area the weekend of July 4th. So if any of you guys down in that area are around, I wouldn't mind meeting up with a few of you guys then. It could make for a few great races.

I'm going to at least check into the predator from RWTD and maybe a pulley setup but would really really like to hold off on the pulley. I'm still running dino oil for heaven's sake! Only 1k miles on the clock.

ssshhhhh.....yes, I am the same guy. I like how you quietly identified the others without using user id's. ;-) How's it going man? The guy I am referring to with the vette is Ben. You remember him with the blue 98' cobra He now has a yellow millenium 02' C5. PM me and send me your email and/or cell # and maybe we can get together sometime. I work alot (at work now) but will be dynoing in Thomasville,GA this saturday and 2 weeks from this Saturday modded.

Craigsvt99 -

I felt the same way as you do.

I ordered the Magnaflow catback, Steeda CAI, and Predator from RWTD - no pulley.

Then I said, What the heck and bought the 2.8 and 73.5 belt from my buddy when he went to a 2.75 and 4# lower.

Now I said What the heck again and ordered BFG DRs which I am having installed today.

The pulley is by far the BEST single mod you can do, the ultimate Bang for the Buck.

Good luck with whatever you decide,

Howard

Sometimes this is just the kind of encouragement you need to hear.

One day in the near future, I will pulley the car, but it will just be after the first Mobil 1 oil change at 3k miles. Probably a 2.8" with idlers. Can't wait for that day. That is why I bought this car. I wanted to reach 500HP/TQ with the Eaton or Apten without headers and with cats, that is my goal one way or another.
